SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN DISTRICT
REFORMATION 500 SERVICE
Sunday, November 5, 2017
3:30 p.m.
I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith” (Romans 1:16,17).
YOU’RE INVITED
Join us for a festival worship service celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. We gather to thank God for preserving the gospel of Jesus our Savior among us, recognizing the role of Martin Luther and the momentous event of 500 years ago. This will be an opportunity for members of many different WELS congregations to enjoy Christian fellowship and to encourage one another to proudly, lovingly, and gently proclaim the saving truths of Scripture.
LOCATION
The service will be held at the Miller High Life Theater (formerly known as the Milwaukee Theatre), located at 500 W. Kilbourn Avenue in downtown Milwaukee.
SERVING US
Pastor James Huebner will be the preacher for the service, with the liturgy being conducted by several other pastors of the district.
CHOIRS
An adult choir directed by Mary Prange and a children’s choir directed by Sarah Zietlow Henrich will also participate. Members of the district are invited to sing in the choirs. Rehearsals will be held on Saturday, November 4. More information about the music the choirs will sing and times and locations for the rehearsals has been sent to all the congregations and schools of the district.
THANKOFFERING
The Reformation 500 Thankoffering that will be gathered at the service has been designated for the district mission board for enhanced home mission work within the district. This offering will provide funds above and beyond the mission board’s regular allotment from the synod’s budget.
Congregations and individuals can also remit gifts for the thankoffering by mail or electronically. If writing a check, please make the check out to "Southeastern Wisconsin District" and send it to District Secretary Billy Carter at P.O. Box 44, Brownsville, WI 53006. Electronic contributions can be made via PayPal at www.sew-wels.net/ref500offering. Note: PayPal will reduce the gift by 2.9%, plus $0.30 per transaction.)
CONGREGATION PLEDGES
Congregations who had submitted pledges to help cover the costs of hosting this service may also make those checks out to “Southeastern Wisconsin District” and send it to Secretary Carter. Money from these pledges that is not needed to cover the cost of the service will be added to the thankoffering.
MATERIALS and RESOURCES
The Reformation 500 committee has also prepared materials that congregations can use to help publicize this service, including bulletin inserts, newsletter articles, and other announcements that can be placed in bulletins as well as congregational websites and/or Facebook pages. These materials have also been sent to every congregation, as well as information about other books and resources about the Reformation and Lutheranism that congregations can make available to their members.
